What if you had a huge amount to pay!? :( I'm sorry this had to happen. It really sucks. But try not to worry about all the uncertainty...just check your credit rating frequently and that's all you can do!Joannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17133232352924060797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724733560682719045.post-58032439296436234002013-03-21T10:06:31.866-07:002013-03-21T10:06:31.866-07:00Yup, so far at least this seems very unpleasant an...Yup, so far at least this seems very unpleasant and worrisome but nowhere near ruinous, thankfully, although drawn-out is unavoidable because that's how the IRS does things, but I'm ok with that as long as it gets taken care of.

I really don't know about the SSN thing. I'm doing a lot of research and figuring out my options, though.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07607702995029211127noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8724733560682719045.post-26727798316935082982013-03-20T20:38:39.665-07:002013-03-20T20:38:39.665-07:00Wow! Identity theft, I'm told, can sometimes be a ruinous, drawn-out affair, but sometimes it can be quick and painless. I had an short identity-theft scare my senior year at Hiram, when someone somehow acquired my debit card information and started racking up bills in California. I caught it within two days, called the back, they reversed the charges, and issued me a new card number.

I wonder, can they issue you a new SSN and transfer the part of your credit history that's known to be actually you to the new record? It also seems to me that an identity available for sale that has a fraud alert on it is worse than useless to potential thieves, because it could get them caught if they do anything with it. Maybe after a while (maybe a yearish?) you can assume that anyone looking to use or sell your information will have discarded it on the assumption that it's too risky and essentially useless? There must be online resources for people with this problem, and steps that the government is supposed to take to ensure that you ARE able to use a real and unique identity to do normal things like build a credit history.Bobthemagiccowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11666984944798091746noreply@blogger.com
